My research in coastal sediment transport and hydrodynamics is historically more from the process-based perspective (i.e., resolving the actual hydrodynamic processes like waves, turbulence, and currents, that drive sediment transport, while simultaneously observing the resulting morphodynamics). This typically involves making measurements at a relatively small-scale (even down to grain scale), at multiple locations along and across beaches, utilizing a range of techniques including remote sensing, in situ deployments, and/or small vessel-based operations. I also collaborate with numerical modellers to gain a larger-scale understanding of the physical processes driving coastal geomorphology.

My focus area spans sediment transport and hydrodynamics in the coastal and nearshore zones, which includes coastal wetlands and marshes. My research methods heavily involve field and large-scale laboratory experimental work.

Most recently, I have shifted focus to more of a morphological standpoint, in developing low-cost, rapid-deployable, line-scanning LiDAR systems, capable of continuously monitoring subaerial & intertidal morphology for long periods of time. This technology will be particularly useful in obtaining hurricane and storm impacts during the event, a crucial yet not well-understood component to developing more resilient coastal communities.
